‘Lean’ manufacturing helps Wisconsin firms thrive

Here are a few case studies of smaller firms using lean for growth. This work was done with the Wisconsin MEP program, part of the national network of state and federally funded lean consulting groups. I like how the company has focused on using the lean savings to drive growth (by buying another press).

“In the past year, WMEP officials said lean techniques have helped 522 Wisconsin manufacturers cut $15 million in costs, retain and increase $78 million in sales, and save or create 1,468 jobs.”

Another interesting quote: “Lean means fast response to the marketplace,” he said. “We can certainly compete with a six-week boat trip from China.” This is very similar to what Jim Womack was talking about the other on his Industry Week web conference.
