Dr. Greg Jacobson and I are doing another new webinar in a few weeks:

Getting Started with Continuous Improvement: Lessons and Reflections

Greg and I will share some of our reflections, missteps, and lessons learned from our first years involved in continuous improvement work. Greg will talk about his early experiences as a physician at Vanderbilt and I will talk about my first year in manufacturing and my later first year in healthcare. We have at least one special guest who will be joining us to share a story (somebody who will be familiar to readers of this blog).

Today, I'd like to share info about a new workshop and two webinars…

ThedaCare Center Workshop on Healthcare Kaizen – 10/14

I'm happy to be debuting a day-long workshop on “Healthcare Kaizen” that's being produced by my friends at the ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value. See the course description and registration information here:

Pilot: Daily Continuous Improvement for Healthcare

The pilot is being held in Appleton, Wisconsin on October 14.

While many associate the word “Kaizen” with formal 3 to 5-day “Rapid Improvement Events,” my workshop will focus on the daily practice of continuous improvement. The class draws on material from our Healthcare Kaizen books and will incorporate some lessons from ThedaCare and we're hoping to do a site visit to a unit that practices what ThedaCare calls “Daily Continuous Improvement.”

One experiment is that some of the introductory didactic material is going to be covered through online pre-work (probably through the Udemy platform), with the time together in the classroom being focused on discussions, simulations, exercises, and planning.

Being a first-time pilot, you get a half-price workshop (but a full day of learning!) for $400. But, this is hardly the first time I've taught material like this.

ThedaCare Center Webinar – 8/27

To help promote the workshop (and to generally spread awareness of daily Kaizen), we are also doing a free webinar on August 27:

Practical Continuous Improvement Leadership: Coaching, Not Judging

About the webinar:

Traditional suggestion box systems place supervisors and managers in the role of judge, approving or rejecting employee ideas. In a Kaizen approach to continuous improvement, supervisors must, instead, play the role of coaches, working with employees to implement as many ideas as possible (with 90% being a good goal).

In this webinar, Mark Graban, co-author of the Shingo Research Award winning books Lean Hospitals and Healthcare Kaizen, will teach proven Kaizen behaviors, providing examples from his work in healthcare organizations.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the role of front-line supervisors and managers play in facilitating Kaizen
  • Describe what senior leaders can do to promote these behaviors
  • Understand how to evaluate and prioritize Kaizen ideas
  • Learn key questions that can be asked to facilitate Kaizen in an organization
