I am happy to be partnering with my friends at Gemba Academy to present the 2nd in their free Lean webinar series. My webinar is called “Putting the Continuous Back in Continuous Improvement” and it will be presented on Wednesday, December 7 at 2 pm Central time. Click here for more information and to register.

I will be presenting ideas from my upcoming book Healthcare Kaizen: Engaging Front-Line Staff in Sustainable Continuous Improvements. While the examples I will share are from healthcare, I think the general Kaizen mindsets and methods apply across industries. As with the book, the focus of my webinar is not on so-called “kaizen events,” but more on daily continuous improvement (see my article about this from Quality Digest). I hope you can join us.

  1. I received a lot of nice feedback from the webinar, including this:

“I just finished watching your Lean presentation and for me it was a real eye opener.

First, thank you for dispelling the myth that Lean ONLY is about saving money and that every Lean project has to show some $ ROI to be considered worthwhile. I just resigned from a hospital that uses Lean that way. I was working in the Lean group as a Management Engineer and everything we did was focused on ROI. Specifically, our department was charged with producing annual savings of a least 3 times the salary budget. Add to it, the hospital bought a benchmarking program and was using the benchmarks at the 25th percentile as productivity standards.

You also succeeded in changing my view of Lean. Although I’m not certified in Lean, I have taken a couple of courses and the focus in how they taught it was on those multi-day Kaizen events, Value Stream Mapping the entire flow, etc. They didn’t even mention the continuous day-to-day incremental approach that you discussed. Now I’m sure there is a legitimate need for those bigger projects but, frankly, I’d much rather be involved with a hospital that took your approach. From a time perspective, it’s so much easier than trying to pull people off their jobs for days at a time.

Anyway, thanks for a terrific presentation.”
