Nissan's version of “TPS” is the “Nissan Production Way”. Here is an interesting article about the use of new technology (RFID) to help their manufacturing process. The Toyota Way has one principle that says to use only established, proven technology. I wonder if Nissan is more willing to take risks? Is Toyota using RFID technology also?

  1. A lot has been said about RFID and a lot more will be said about it.

There seems to be limitless possibilities for using RFID in just about any setting. I think Lean practitioners will find applications with inventory management, kanbans, WIP, changeover monitoring, precision machine cycle counting/verification, traceability, etc.

Maybe the next steps also include tracking staff members and physical orders as they travel the plant. In job shops you could sure create an effortless and paperless billable hours record not to mention improve your estimating process.

The simplicity behind RFID will definitely contribute to creating a Lean information flow. I’m excited about the possibilities.
