Tomorrow, at the Society for Health Systems annual conference, I'll be presenting about some of the ideas in my upcoming book (with Joe Swartz) Healthcare Kaizen: Engaging Front-Line Staff in Sustainable Continuous Improvements. See tweets about the  conference, including mine by following the hashtag #SHS2012.

We are still going through cycles of editing and typesetting, but we're happy to share an early version of Chapter 1 of our book. If you go to www.HCkaizen.com and enter your email address, you'll immediately receive a link to download the chapter, which includes an overview of the rest of the book. Joe and I would love to hear your feedback. Over time, you'll receive updates as we get closer to our release date in paperback and Kindle formats (which should be May or June).

  1. I am reading ‘Lean hospitals’ by Mr. Mark Graban at the suggestion of PhD. Francisco Ramis Lanyon, who has worked for many years with health institutions and has founded the advanced process simulation centre in Concepción, Chile,(“CASP”) first to model and to improve manufacturing processes and then to implement the simulation technologies and improvements in large hospitals and clinics in Chile and in the United States. He is now applying the criteria of lean manufacturing to improve healthcare institutions previously modelled in its centre of simulation CASP.

After meeting Mr. Ramis at the University where we studied mechanical engineering, for many years we have worked together as consultants in strategic planning, re-engineering and others involving organizational changes and now in hospitals and clinics optimizing its processes and redesigning layouts under the concepts of Lean.

I really appreciate very much the useful book written by Mr. Graban. It is not easy to find such in-deep knowledge expressed so clearly on a subject as complex. Thanks a lot.

    • Alan – thank you for the kind words about my book. It’s exciting and interesting to hear about lean healthcare work in Chile. This past week, I met a student from Chile who was attending a conference in the U.S., talking about the healthcare improvement work he was involved in.
