It's official – the 2nd revised edition of my first book, Lean Hospitals: Improving Quality, Patient Safety, and Employee Engagement, is now shipping from Amazon.com! Other country sites, like Amazon.ca and Amazon.co.uk don't have their inventory yet. Ah, paper and global supply chains!. I received my author's box of books on Friday and sent off the signed copy that was won through our recent charity auction.

The Kindle version should be available within a week or two, I'm told. It should be available in Nook, Google Books, and other formats as the first edition was. I'm currently researching doing an audiobook version and you can sign up for more info here.

If you'd prefer to order via my publisher, Productivity Press, there is a discount code that you can use to get 20% off:

I already blogged here about what's new and different with the 2nd edition and you can get info there about how to download the free 1st chapter in PDF form.

The book is physically a few pages shorter in the 2nd edition, but the font is smaller — there's more content in the 2nd edition, with the new case studies, updated data, and new discussions on A3, strategy deployment, and more Lean management topics. There is also a new foreword by Dr. John Toussaint, CEO of the ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value.

He wrote, in part:

Whether it is the ThedaCare story … Seattle Children's … or Virginia Mason, the answer is in: Lean works. The question now for all of you is how are you going to do it? What is the leadership model required? … There will be many questions, and I believe starting with Mark Graban's updated book Lean Hospitals is a good first step. … This book lays out the nuts and bolts of the Lean methodology and describes the more difficult challenges, which have to do with managing change. … I wish I could have read this in 2004, as it might have prevented some of the mistakes we made in our Lean transformation journey.

Thanks to John and thanks also to the entire team at Productivity Press for their efforts and assistance in bringing this new edition to print.

As I've said before, I wouldn't expect those who already bought the 1st edition to go and buy this 2nd edition (save your book budget for my next book, Healthcare Kaizen perhaps? I'll be curious to hear your feedback on the 2nd edition. As always, please consider leaving a review on Amazon.com, as that really helps with book sales.

One reader was excited enough to tweet about receiving his copy in the mail. But, he then followed it up with this priceless tweet:

Daughter brings me my Lean Hospitals book to read it to her. Starting her journey early, two pages in shes asleep. New bed time book?

I've heard that my book can be an effective sleep aid, but reading it to kids… that's off label use! :-)

I will have a blog post later this week where I reflect a bit (and invite your reflections) on what has changed with Lean in healthcare over the past three years. I'll be curious to hear your thoughts on that too.
