I completely agree that almost no company is close remotely close to do a good job of getting much of the gain offered by adopting Deming, lean, Ackoff... We have barely begun to incorporate ideas decades old. The waste left in organizations from the failure to do a thorough job is incredibly massive. The absolute best companies have huge gains still to make. Most companies have barely even begun to gain a fraction of the benefits they would by adopting well know decades old ideas.

GREAT stuff, Mark. We need more articles like this in national publications to trumpet the benefits of continuous improvement in healthcare. As far as the comments about everyone in industry having already done Lean and Deming, I'd cut the reporter some slack - they only know as much as they are being told about the background of a story. We know better - American arrogance, perhaps?

Mark,The comment that there's only incremental improvements left to be made with lean also made me gag. Even if he were right, has he read nothing about Toyota? Doesn't he know that incremental gains, sustained over the long term, leads to significant improvement and sustainable competitive advantage?Blech. Maybe he should take a tour of Detroit before he writes his next article.
