Womack & Jones at the Gemba: "Spread" and Innovation

Womack and Jones video on spread – Blog – ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value

From John Toussaint’s blog, this video starts with a question about (I’m paraphrasing) how do you balance continuous innovation (in how “Lean” works in a hospital) with the desire to spread what already works? Are there organizations to study to learn about this? That’s John running the FlipVideo camera and commenting, also, from behind the camera.

Jim says, basically, that you’re always going to be innovating and if the next area thinks they can just copy, then they’re missing the point. Being “cookie cutter” and “spraying this a molecule deep” will certainly fail, Jim says.

Dan asks if you’re expecting the next units to be 100% ready when they start or 85% ready with additional experimentation? What’s the proper pace of spreading the implementation throughout ThedaCare or any organization?

Excellent question followed by answers full of insight. Here is my two cents – I find a phrase from Jim and Dan's book, Lean Solutions, provides an excellent guideline. As soon as the members of the new unit “believe in the virtue of the new process”, you can accomplish spread. The “virtue” requirement sets the speed. In the video, Jim and Dan discussed two ways to move faster -moving people to next units, and Toyota’s technique of sending units (suppliers) out to spread to others. Both leverage “peer to peer” advantages to reach the “virtue” requirement more efficiently.

How would I answer her question? With a question: "What is it you want to spread, and why?" perhaps. Use the opportunity to start a conversation that might develop some deeper understanding.
