Lean Hospitals Book

A few quick updates on my book, Lean Hospitals: Improving Quality, Patient Safety, and Employee Satisfaction. It is still due out July 23, 2008.

If you want to sign up for my email newsletter about the book, there's now a sign up box in the left column of this page and on www.leanhospitalsbook.com. I have a “real” design in progress for that site, planning for a launch in late April.

I have updated my LeanBoard Message Board to have some sections specific to Lean in hospitals and my book. The old discussion sections are still there. I'm going to expand the board to include areas for each chapter/topic in my book.

For those who are interested in the process. The book is currently going through copy editing and we are looking at cover design options. I'll share the cover design when it is public.

  1. Mark,

I recall you and Jeff Liker having a brief discussion about how un-lean the book publishing process is during a podcast a couple years ago.

Now that you have “gone to gemba” for yourself, I wonder if you would like to share some of your observations on the process?

Hopefully you won’t get stuck with the usual publishers overproduction. Print 10,000 copies because that’s where the price break is…then get stuck with a warehouse full of unsold books!

  2. I think the only comment I’ll make is that the handoff from me (as author) to my editors was pretty much a “batch process” where the manuscript was turned in all at once (per their process design). My editor did take some early chapters for review and feedback, but that was pretty late in the process.

That said, I’m happy with my publisher and their role in the process. They’re a good partner (and they created the opportunity for me).
