Seems to me there is a two-fold opinion on this product. First, will this tablet solve underlying root cause problems? The answer to that is most likely NO. On the other hand, if healthcare professionals are diligent in pursuing root cause problems and the stakeholders (including users) determine that using a tablet makes sense for their process, then a tablet could become real part of a solution. However, it is important to recognize that the TABLET is not the solution in itself. Jamie Flinchbaugh once told me "Rules, not Tools." First establish the lean rule, and then use tools as necessary for support. If it's not helping the overall VALUE to the customer - it's just a bunch of muda.

Companies like Intel want to sell a platform consumer electronic product with a nice high margin - no harm in that of itself. If they truly want to help the healthcare industry, however, they will focus their sales value on helping customers root cause their problems, and integrating their product into the solution in a way that makes sense, as well as provide adequate training to ensure standardized use. Will that really happen? I guess we'll see.
--Andrea Jones

I understand your sentiments and agree that it would be useful to understand why nurses don't have time to do this and that. But it's clear that this product wasn't created blindly. The focus was definitely on addressing real problems for nurses by making the model device useful. Real nurses were used for collaboration that led to the end product. could the study have gone further? No doubt. But it certainly seems like it's in the right direction, in my opinion.

Healthcare never ceases to amaze me. I have a theory that deep down inside all Doctors & Pharmacists are really engineers who wished they had become engineers.

I have yet to meet a doctor or pharmacist (the more clinically trained in the healthcare group) that is not fascinated or enamored with "Gadgets" or "gadgetrety"...basically take whatever you have or are selling, put some bells & whistles on it & show it to a doctor or pharmacist and they will oooh & aaaahh, then buy it on impulse.

Thanks for posting this Mark, this helps exemplify and bolster my theory about the 'gadget' industry called healthcare.
