Thanks, Mark. I'm sure part of the "be safe" is driven by the role of lawyers in the healthcare system. I wonder what % of treatment, needed or not (particularly diagnostics), is driven by lawsuit prevention?

The incentives in healthcare are clearly complicated and dysfunctional. As long as providers are paid for "doing stuff" (needed or not), that "overprocessing" waste will be there.

I've started watching the medical show "House" on Fox, summer re-runs. In one episode, they're trying to diagnose a prison patient and Dr. House says basically "run everything on him, the state is paying for it."

What a system.

Dear Mark,

Good job highlighting the issues/opportunity of lean healthcare by using a specific case study.

You hit on the first question to be asked: Does this patient really need this medication ("prevent using this drug altogether")? As you know, one of the first questions to ask while eliminating waste and complexity is: Does this really need to be done at all? My perception a a lay person is that the healthcare industry is quick to administer treatments and medication "to be safe", without assessing the real risk-factors.

Mark Edmondson, LEAN Affiliates
