"Nonessential" Workers

Hard-hit New Orleans will lay off 3,000 workers – The Boston Globe:

“Nagin had warned that many of New Orleans's nonessential jobs were at risk”

Without getting overly political, this is an “only in government” moment. Some people have been blogging about “lean government” lately. If you can cut half your workforce with little ill effect, wow, you're not lean.

How insulting, also, to be told that you are “nonessential.” Ouch.
